Mary Hickey, Tallaght University Hospital – Recording: Lean Sigma Methodology in Healthcare

The event

At  our September webinar speaker, Mary Hickey from Tallaght University Hospital, discussed the application of Lean Six Sigma Methodology in an Acute Hospital setting.

Mary is the Quality Improvement Lead at Tallaght University Hospital responsible for Quality Improvement, Licensing and Standards, Project Training / Coaching / Mentoring, Clinical Audit, and Policy Development within the organisation. She has extensive experience in the areas of Lean Six Sigma, Business Process Improvement, Quality Management, Project Management, Strategic Planning, Problem Solving, large scale change programmes, coaching and mentoring project leads and improvement teams in a healthcare setting.

A University College Dublin MBA graduate, she assumed the role of Deployment Manager for the Six Sigma Continuous Improvement Programme within the hospital in 2001. A core part of her work is co-ordinating training (meeting facilitation skills, continuous improvement and project management) providing coaching/mentoring for project leads to complete their improvement projects and managing her team.

She received her own Six Sigma Black Belt and Master Black Belt Certification from the Juran Institute in 2006 & 2009 respectively and has presented widely in Europe, UK and Ireland at Six Sigma and Lean Conferences. A recipient of a Public Service Excellence Award for the successful implementation of the Six Sigma programme from the Taoiseach in 2004, Mary introduced Lean Methodologies in Tallaght University Hospital in 2008. The first Kaizen Report Out in Irish Healthcare was held in Tallaght, November 2008. A graduate of Kingstown College, Mary currently provides personal, leadership and executive coaching to internal staff. A recent recipient of a Post Graduate Diploma in Healthcare Innovation Mary uses design thinking as part of the project training.
