Training in Biological Wastewater Treatment – The Activated Sludge Process

Date:
February 28, 2018
Location:
Croke Park Dublin, Ireland
Registration:

The requirement for training and staff updating in the understanding, management and operation of biological wastewater systems is ongoing and applies to industry and local authorities alike. Industrial wastewater discharges have long been subject to licensing under the Water Pollution Acts (1977 – 1990) and Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control (IPPC) legislation (arising from Directive 96/61/EC and the Environmental Protection Agency Act, 1992). More recently, the Waste Water Discharge (Authorisation) Regulations, 2007 (S.I. No. 684 of 2007) have introduced an authorisation system for all local authority wastewater discharges, the EPA being designated as the relevant competent authority.

Objectives

This course will introduce participants to the skills required for efficient design, operation and troubleshooting of the activated sludge process – the most widely applied technology for biological wastewater treatment. A knowledge of the basics of aerobic biological treatment processes is assumed.
The principal course objectives are to provide

  • an insight into the more complex aspects of the activated sludge process
  • an understanding of more recent developments, including membrane technologies, granular activated sludge and the removal of nutrients

Who Should Attend

Those who already have an understanding of the basics of biological wastewater treatment but wish to have a more in-depth knowledge of the design, operation and performance capabilities of the activated sludge process.
