Quote

““Wyeth Nutrition Askeaton’s AWS Platinum certification is reflective of the site’s commitment to meeting the highest standards of water stewardship,” – Ian Ryan, Certified Water Steward and Internal AWS Certification Lead. “We are delighted to be the first AWS Platinum-certified site here in Ireland and acknowledge the support from Enterprise Ireland’s Green Plus programme and our service provider, Central Solutions.”

GreenPlus Project Objectives

Wyeth committed to achieving the Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS) standard at its Askeaton site by 2020 to drive its environmental efficiencies. The main objective of this project was to support Wyeth in the implementation of water stewardship strategy, principles and procedures at the Askeaton site via water stewardship training, the development of a water stewardship manual and consulting support to enable the site to certify to the AWS Standard by the end of 2020.

Key Challenges

The key challenges posed during this project related to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the project plan and in-person training between Wyeth and the service provider, Central Solutions. The AWS audit of the site in Askeaton had originally been scheduled for March 2020 but this was postponed as a result of measures that Wyeth have taken to protect its staff and operations.

However, this period enabled the project team to refocus its efforts on addressing the key gaps identified in the AWS Gap Analysis Report. Contact continued during this period between both parties remote via video-conferencing technology and a renewed effort was placed in maximising this time to enable Wyeth to focus on undertaking activities to enable them to meet the advanced indicators of the AWS Standard.

Key Changes

Water stewardship practices and procedures have been implemented, standardised and externally validated at Wyeth site in Askeaton via the newly developed Site Water Stewardship Manual which contains the strategy and implementation plan for water stewardship on site.

Wyeth has proven its credentials as an exemplar site nationally and internationally for Water Stewardship with the Platinum Certification from AWS.

Outcomes

Wyeth’s Askeaton site received a Platinum certification under the rigorous Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS) Standard in October 2020. The Limerick-based site became the first site in Ireland, and only the second Nestlé site in the world, to earn this highest attainable rating.

This certification demonstrates the site’s elite performance in water stewardship and commitment to understanding their relationship with water, embedding the appropriate principles and measures into the factory, engaging with the local community and sharing best practices with the wider water stewardship community internationally.
